A video projected behind a comical dance piece by Jon Levin at Puppet Playlist 11: Simon and/or Garfunkel. Gives context to the choreography.

Arbucke Industries hired me to edit a short documentary they made for Architect Magazine about the second phase of the High Line on the West side of Manhattan. Interviews with the designers and other High Line bigwigs. Shot on 5D, edited on the controversial Final Cut Pro X. Good experience.

I edited this “fashion story” by the Hayes Brothers. Shot on a RED in beautiful 2K (and some shots in 4K), I worked with the Hayes to bring their vision to life. The workflow was a little crazy, too: we exported proxies from RED, I cut a rough in Final Cut, exported an XML, brought it into Premiere, exported that to After Effects, we exported 2K masters and I onlined everything in AE just before output. Shoutouts to Matt Posorske and Jake McCoy for their help in the clutch.

I video-designed this deconstruction of John Osborne’s Look Back In Anger by the fantastic production company, Sister Sylvester. Directed by Kathryn Hamilton, the piece took the underlying themes and imagery of the original and split the text open. Video played an integral role, as one of the central themes was the way media changes the way we interact with the world around us. Video was projected onto the back wall via two projectors and across four TVs throughout the playing area. It was a great collaboration, a fantastic cast and a great project with which to be involved.

So. I did it. I broke down and got me an iPad. Got a great deal on a used 1st gen. I’m still getting the hang of typing on it but it generally seems to work pretty well. Probably actually faster than handwriting. Im also forcng myself to accept single-space sentence breaks. It’s funny that so much of the ui is trying to recreate tangible things.

Sent my messenger bag in for repairs. Means I’ll be bagless for a couple weeks. Maybe I need to get another one.

Been really busy. Productive, but no time to myself. Trying to get a new reel together with the stuff I’ve been doing at blue barn. I hope to get it done in the next few weeks. I really need it.

I was called in for an “After Effects emergency” last week.  As it turned out, it was a very exciting project!  I worked with Nick Hayes and his editor, Ilkke, to adapt photos Nick had taken for display on a video billboard in Times Square.  He’d made a Photoshop template which I imported into After Effects and animated.  It required a lot of precision- the specifications of the American Eagle billboard required pixel-perfect layout on four 2K files.  Pretty cool.  It ended up being simple, effective and epic.

It’s been a while since I’ve “web-logged,” so I’m going to now.  Got very busy before the holidays, not a lot of time to think.  But then I went home.  It was great.  Good family.  Good food.  Yeah.  And Theresa came to visit!  She met my high-school friends (it went well), got too see the glories of Southwest Ohio and had the opportunity to see the legendary room of High School Jesse.  You don’t realize how many collectable card games you have until your girlfriend sees ALL OF THEM.  We went down to Kentucky.  Saw the Creation Museum.  Apparently, there was an earthquake while we were there.  Wild.

Got back and got right to work- went out to Long Island to film Canon erect a the first structural beam on their new HQ.  Edited a commercial for a Carroll Gardens yarn/fabric store.  Shot a Miniboone recording session.

My most recent exciting work has been a last-minute gig I got for Hayes+Hayes.  They were preparing an ad for the New York Cosmos to go on the American Eagle flagship billboard.  They needed some last-minute After Effectsing, and I got the job.  Simple stuff, but dealing with 2K footage and extremely specific, pixel-perfect requirements.  And an absurd deadline.  But we did it.  Should be live in Times Square at this very moment.  I can’t wait to see it.

I’ve also been volunteering/interning with Punchdrunk’s Sleep No More.  Very excited.  I built a brick wall with Jon Levin.  I can’t wait for the show- I’m hoping to get more involved.  It’s amazing to see behind the scenes of this experience that used to be incredibly magical.  Losing the magic, but understanding the craft.  I really want everyone I know to see this show.
