Know Way Out was a journalism conference hosted by the Joongang Media Group in Seoul. It brought speakers from around the world to discuss the future of the industry. They brought me on board to create custom real-time effects to enliven their image magnification system. I used OpenFrameworks to create several custom looks that matched their art direction.

One look converted the image of the speaker into ASCII characters, one was a simple pincushion effect, with blocks that changed size based on brightness of the live image. The highlight was a particle system whose elements not only changed size and brightness based on the live image, but were pushed around by the motion. Using OpenCV, I detected the “flow” of the on-camera motion and allowed that to displace the particles. The result gave the image a compelling and unique style that set it apart from simple I-Mag.
